Of course. Even there isn't any "Gouda Cheese" produced anymore in Gouda doen't mean Gouda is not proud of the name "Cheese city of the world".
Facts about "Gouda Cheese"
Gouda cheese is originally Dutch hard cheese. It is one of the best known and most consumed cheeses.
A Gouda cheese is in the form of a wheel, weighs between 1 and 16 kg and has a fat content of at least 48% (usually around 51%). This fat content is the amount of fat on the basis of the total dry matter (excluding water / moisture). The actual fat content amounts to 32% fat, on the basis of the weight (including water / moisture). Especially cheese contains calcium, but also vitamins A, B and D. When compared to other cheeses Gouda cheese contains little vitamin B12, but once again more vitamin K2.
The species gets its name Gouda cheese to the fact that he has been traded for centuries in Gouda.
The cheese market in Gouda is now only held as a tourist attraction once a week during the summer. Gouda cheese is also made abroad under this name because generic form and are not protected. The geographical indication 'Gouda Holland' is since October 2010 according to a European Commission decision a protected indication. Cheese with this information may only Netherlands and origin and must be made of Dutch cow. Gouda cheeses are mass produced in cheese factories.
Gouda farmer's cheese is also in the year 2013, as was once customary, made on farms in the region, such as near Stolwijk Haastrecht and on farms in Krimpenerwaard. This cheese is also sold under the name Stolwijker.
Gouda is a statue of a cheese maid in a square. This farmer in bronze is clamped firmly in her clogs and holding a Gouda cheese from her apron. With this image of the sculptor Ineke van Dijk, bestowed honors in 1988 at the women who still play a role in the Dutch cheese history, because in the western Netherlands, the artisanal cheesemaking been maintained on some farms. That craft is mainly from mother to daughter.
