Hummers

By IamDora

First. A big apology for just voting or a hurried comment. We've had a huge thunderstorm here; internet down most of the day and then the site was glitching badly. I'll make it up tomorrow which will likely be today.

I'm not sure, but just by the camera used, I think I took the lead and V1 at The Waterfall Gardens. I know I took V2 at an orchid farm a year or so later where we had lunch and the owner took us off to see the hummingbird nest, Mama was off having her lunch apparently. Later she was back on the nest.

The bright coloured hummers are males. The females are usually a dull brown or green. I once had one use the red threads from my hammock to make a nest. It was well buried in the leaves but I could always spot it up there because of the red. Hummingbirds apparently can see colours we can only imagine.

What a wonderful set, Dora. As you go south from the US, the variety of hummingbirds keeps growing into South America, and even up into the Andes. I saw on PBS here a show about them....and the question, with their very high heartbeat and metabolism how they sleep...the answer was that they hibernate to sleep...everything slows WAY down.

The heart rate is something like 1200 beats per minute and those wing beat something like 60 times per minute. Talk about a sugar high!

Nothing more than flash lightening but the thunder claps were ear splitting. Rainy season is starting over a month early this year. It poured down with rain and on these tin roofs ... it was a noisy day. We've had trade winds for 3 or 5 days - odd for this time of year as well. The wind is what usually messes up the internet.
