Good morning....
Thank you for the great comments on yesterdays elephants much appreciated, also a big thank you to Julia (natureshaven) and Darryl (carper123) for their UA's .......so chuffed
Today a hyena pup...they are very cute as youngsters but as they grow up I think they become quite ugly. These were taken years ago with a small camera. We very seldom get sightings like this. It was so hard to pick a lead image as I love them all and if I had the time would have given them their own uploads.
The Hyena is Africa's most common large carnivore. Reputed to be cowardly and timid, the hyena can be bold and dangerous attacking animals and humans. They are organized into territorial clans of related individuals that defend their home ranges against intruding clans. The centre of clan activity is the den, where the cubs are raised. Hyenas are social animals that communicate with one another through specific calls.
Hyenas normally bear litters of two to four cubs and are born with their eyes open. Cubs begin to eat meat after 5 months but are suckled for as long as 12 to 18 months. At about 1 year, cubs begin to follow their mothers on their hunting and scavenging forays. Until then they are left behind at the den with a babysitting adult.
The variants show the mother and her pups as well as a hyena exiting the den. (this den is an old termite mound)
have a nice day
