A great opportunity here Colin. For a captive I would have expected alot more detail and a sharper image, but handheld, why dont you carry the tripod with you?
Also too much space to the left totally wasted. I f you had shot in portrait you could have got in closer and still left space in front of the Barny and thus retrieved more detail from this fine bird.
I'm sure this will make 100 and am sure you are happy with it.
But sorry for a posed captive it should be a lot better.

Most beautiful of owls Colin and a nice shot of it - Richard has got a point as for comp but again like with frames comp could be a personal thing - this shows good dof and I think the title alone deserves a vote LOL _ Ina

Good shot Colin but agree about there being a little too much space on the left. On first sight it would appear that the whites are bordering on being blown, that is not the case however. If you set the highlights to around 30/35% this will bring out so much more detail in the white head and chest (yes its all there). Apply it to the bird only by selecting just inside the outer edge of the bird with the polygonal lasso tool and feather by 2 or 3 pixels, set shadows to zero and highlights as mentioned (30/35%), do this carefully though because if the feathering isn't right and it spills over into the BG it may cause a slight halo which tends to look as though the shot may have been over sharpened, hope this helps,
Regards,
Geoff.
PS: Have uploaded a mod to show the effect, also cropped and added a little more sharpening, do bear in mind though that this is a small file size to work with and will never be as good as the original.

It's a lovely shot Colin but I agree too much of the scenery and not enough of the bird. I tend to do the same thing.

Great portrait Colin and I love that eye contact and sunny details.
A little wide, but I personally like the space and the landscape crop. And if you're already at the limit of your zoom where turning portrait would give you no more detail (except for the ephotozine upload), landscape would then be my preference.
And some excellent advice from Geoff on the highlights, which will often come in handy - but as an alternative solution for this example, I've added a mod where I've just darkened the whole image - recovering the highlights and effectively boosting the contrast too

Great photo .. captive or not Barn owls are hard to get right in a picture ... that is also a young bird probably just out of training ... Colin has got access to an older scruffier version later this year & with this he can get as close as he dares to.
