I'm up here!

By ladynewbury

It was a cold but beautiful bright day. I spotted this woodpecker high up in a tree enjoying the winter sunshine.

Have you ever wondered how the brain of the woodpecker is protected when hammering?

The hinge where the front of the skull connects with the upper mandible, is folded inwards, tensioned by a muscle that braces it against the shock of the impact when the bill is hammering on hard wood. The outer layer of the upper mandible is significantly longer than the more rigid lower mandible and absorbs much of the concussive force. Skeletal adaptations and strengthening also help to absorb the shock.

I big thank you for the V's & C's on 'keep looking up, I don't think she's seen us' and special thanks to Sue (Sue118), Ray (ThePixelator) & Mike (Mike_Smith for their special awards. Pam
