Land iguana (conolophus), Galapagos islands.

Described by Darwin as an ugly animal, but it has some nicer colours compared to its more famous cousin - the marine iguana.

The spiny crest is on display here as it warms up in the early morning sun.

Like many of the Galapagos species it never developed any instincts to flee from predetors so the cats, dogs and rats brought by man found an easy prey. Competition for food from introduced goats has also reduced numbers.
