Ilton Druids Folly

By onlythepony
Note - I've added a load of 'versions' with different views and stones from the Folly and surrounding area to help give a feel for the place Smile

Ilton Druids temple folly... near Masham / Northallerton , North Yorks .. well worth the trip , tho don't trust your satnav unless you are driving a tractor ! Best to go through Masham !
Really fab place set in the woods so a nice walk out. There's a little dwelling at the back ( I was stood on the roof to take this photo ! ) which is quite cosy .... they used to pay someone to live in it at one point - If they did now I'd do it as long as they let me take my horse and let her roam the woods Smile
If you can't make the pilgrimage to Stone Henge then this is definitely a great alternative !

Great to see this as it's a new one on me. A very solid, compact structure which is no doubt the heart of a much larger complex. Thanks for sharing.

This is the main part - though there's lots more little monuments and standing stones spread through the woods... and there's much more to this bit than can be seen in this one photo... including a table , an alter and lots of little alcoves... and of course the building I was stood above... all made from solid chunks of stone - must have took some doing ! ( unlike Stone Henge ... will have been easy for the aliens to build that with their technology Tongue )
Thanks for comments Smile

At least you can touch these stones Jonathan, Stonehenge has wire fencing around it these days, unless you get special permission. Pam

I should have gone to Stonehenge when I was younger - just never got around to it - not sure I'll bother if you can't get near / around it - I like to feel the energy of places and get a feel for their past Smile Among my current list for the UK is the Kelpies in Scotland - though with the size of them I'll forgo the need to touch if I can't get near Smile ... might have a long weekend there next year so I can see them at sunrise and sunset Smile

A beautiful shot of this beautiful place; wish it wasn't so far from Cornwall!

Cheers - it's not so far away if you look at it on a small map , lol Smile
It's less than an hour's drive for me but even then I've only been once as not many people seem to know it's there ... will have to have another visit in the spring Smile

A lovely set of images in the versions Jonathan. We drove past Stonehenge on our way home from Devon last week. There were a fair amount of tourists on the site, but of course couldn't get close enough to touch because of the wire fencing. Dave likes to touch old stones, and imagine how it was in their time. Thanks for showing.

Happy New Year, I hope it's a good one. Pam
