In loving memory of George

By mrswoolybill
First of two Saturday Shadows from Ryton churchyard, just along the valley from us. I was interested in the way that the dappled light broke up the shapes of the gravestones.
Two versions - the second has coarse grain added. Interesting the way it affects the background light..
Thanks for looking,
Moira

Shadows are fantastic - in both shots! Wonderful depth too and of course, perfect treatment!

Adding grain has adversely affected the background, in my opinion, making it brighter and sharper, taking the eye away from the headstone.
The dappled light does exactly as you say, softening the sharp shape of the stone.

Thanks Malc, that's what I am seeing (and that's why I have uploaded them in this order). Interestingly, I have another pair to come next Saturday where I think the coarser grain works much better.
And Happy Weekend folks!

Yes, I think the lead is the more successful of the pair.

I must agree with Malc, adding the grain distracts from the cross, so it has to be the lead for me as well! An interesting experiment though.

A fine looking memorial cross, and Saturday Shadows too, Moira 👍 I'm torn between the two - the version has more punch, but it also brightens the background, attracting the eye to it 😃

A consensus appears to be building here. I shall not demur.
I think it's brave of you to upload a Version that you agree hasn't worked so well.

Thanks folks. I find it an interesting comparison, as my instinct would normally head for coarse grain with a subject like this. I shall upload a different pair in reverse order next Saturday, same location, same light, same background, but the effect is different I think.

Lead for me. It needs no enhancement.

The lead is more emotional for me. But interesting to see how an image can sometimes be over done.

I like both Moira. I do like a bit of grain and always associate it with that higher ISO brightness so maybe a tad lighter but very doable to me! Love a graveyard.

Take care.
