In memory of Jane

By mrswoolybill
The graveyard at Tynemouth Priory again.
The monument to Admiral 'Cuddy' Collingwood in the background, see here for his story.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

Quote:I wonder about Jane's story much more...

So do I, Chrissy. That's why she is in the foreground and in focus.

Well he might have a bigger monument than her... but he's just as dead, when all's said and done.

That's all the facts, when it comes to brass tacks. Birth, and copulation, and death. (TS Eliot, Sweeney Agonistes)
Thanks guys, and thanks Ollie for the UA.

And it doesn't necessarily mean he was better loved - just that his family had more money.

t image that has you wondering all about the life she had. It makes me think of the poem "Elegy for Jane" by Theodore Roethke: -

If only I could nudge you from this sleep,
My maimed darling, my skittery pigeon.
Over this damp grave I speak the words of my love:
I, with no rights in this matter,
Neither father nor lover.

Reading the whole poem again just seem to work with my thoughts of the image.

An excellent composition, Moira and although it seems obvious, the title just couldn't be better.

I wonder if this is where Slade got the title for their song

There is a town at the very northern end of NZ south island named "Collingwood", don't know if it has any connection with this person, however, several towns around the country are named after the first white men to settle the land.

Jane..aged 29.. a local maiden who died over unrequited love?
excellent tones and DoF for this shot, and a story to be imagined..

Splendid composition, the headstone and the statue make a strong diagonal, works really well.

A great use of selective focussing, to capture the main part of the final image, and reduce the rest to out-of-focus blurs, but still discernible!

A great mono composition, the legible writing of Jane's name on the tombstone gets one thinking and adds interest.

Yes, she may have had a good a life as Cuddy in the background, but she's got centre stage here in this well-compsed image 😃👍

Thanks everyone, for some very thoughtful comments. Jane was the wife of William and died aged just 29.
Thanks too to John and Joline for their UAs.

I've done a bit of scouting around and the town was indeed named after Admiral Collingwood, in honour of his service at Trafalgar. He never set foot in NZ, although he was involved in the exploration of Central America.
