This is Lewis, a gentle giant of a horse who lives at the Brantome Police Horse stables in France (www.brantomepolicehorses.com/) which is a charity set up to care for retired British police horses.
Lewis is being slowly rehabilitated after he was totally traumatised following his involvement in riot control in London where rioters pelted him with sticks and stones.
I'm not a 'horsey' person at all but being in the presence of Lewis and his companions was one of the most moving experiences ever - he had every reason not to trust humans but he stood stock still and allowed me to hug him and photograph him.
This close up of his beautiful eye left me wondering what horrors he had witnessed.
