Industries End

By Hop-A-Long
As you all know is that I completed a FDA in photography last May, what you might not know is that I Passed with a Commendation.
Its funny to think that three years of hard work went into gaining my qualification and also how my passion for photography slowly ebbed away with the pressures of producing the work involved to complete the degree. It is not realised when taking on such a thing that even though it has the word "Photography" in the title, there is actually very little of that done. I remember one year I didn't pick a camera up for 6 months, my time was taken up researching and writing.
Having said that, the knowledge I now have was worth every second. I understand photography more and appreciate it when you see someones conceptual piece.
I also have a new outlook on critique, it is worth its weight in gold and should be embraced by the photographer rather than repelled. You don't have to agree with it as it is of course only someone elses opinion, but listening sometimes gives an idea that may enhance the picture.
Anyway, my passion is back now I don't have the weight of the workload on my shoulders.

Todays photo is one from my degree work, I am hoping that the version uploads as well, although I haven't uploaded a version in a while as I have just started my e2 membership once again, we shall see. Well, together the two photos are a complete set handed in and given top marks for one of my projects.
The project had the title "Sunderland" and basically we had to produce a project that had something to do with Sunderland.
I chose the Shipbuilding Industry or the now extinct industry within Sunderland.
I wanted to find a way of representing the shipbuilding, the demise of the industry and the relationship to the sea. The two photos are my interpretation of this.
I could have photographed what is left of the shipyards, which is not alot but enough to probably make a project. This I felt was to obvious and not really very strong, image wise.
The two photos uploaded today are what I came up with.

I hope you like them, any comments as always are welcome.

I recall the days when Leith had a thriving shipbuilding industry too Andy,
and it is to my regret I did not record its demise !!
Different takes here, and all the better for it too !!

So pleased to see you back as an E2 member, Andy, and with two cracking images -it's hard to choose between them, they both tell a strong story with no words needed.

Serious academic study can be a bit like you've described; it is worth it in the end. Even more dispiriting I found having to lower my standards to try to teach unwilling students; at least you were a volunteer, and that makes life easier for the teachers too . . . .

I know to little about Sunderland to have a valid comment. Anyway do I prefer v2 for some reason, interesting interpretations

Glad to hear you graduated with a commendation Andy - good work I'd say.

I have a similar image taken at Jacksonville Beach last summer, but it is not of discarded industrial items. I do like this and the nice low pov.

V1 is special. I have this thing about discarded clothing, particularly footwear at the moment - it raises so many questions, hints at personal stories, people's lives. This works particularly well for the theme, so much past and so many people have been abandoned along that coast.

Congratulations on graduating Andy, I bet you feel as though a great weight has been lifted from your shoulders now that it is finally over. I remember the relief when i finished my Msc in Environmental management some 10/11 years ago now
