Not really...just set the camera on a tripod, with a remote shutter that I can lock on. Used bulb setting and locked the shutter open for whatever length of time i felt was right....then waved the torch about in front of the lens.
The only real difficulty is remembering to write any letters backwards unless you want to mirror the image on the pc.
Oh...and it took a few attempts to work out exactly where to be writing the letters...the early shots were a bit lop sided or off centre.
