Your camera has been placed in just the right spot to record the anomaly of the foreground and background lighter tones being intersected by a midground of dark tones, which messes with the expectation that the tones will usually lighten progressively as the distance increases. Of course, the reason is that the mid-ground is heavily forested and the mountain in the distance is pure rock. There is additional interest when you look at the way in the way the sun lights up the two different cloud types--one of which suggests at first glance a wave of water rolling in.
