Insects #14

Glenn Conant suggested that photographing butterflies is addictive....and I agree...they are probably the "glamor 'bugs'" of the insect world...and i get that too....and, for me there is a fascination with so many creatures that become visible when we look into the macro (and I suppose micro) world, that these creatures...so small...are so complex. And being able to capture them and show them is one of the privileges of us photographers...I think for me...bees are a particular fascination....

So, here is a caterpillar....i have no idea what it becomes (though I bet Glenn Conant or Jenn Taggart do know).

And a grateful thanks from the master of butterflies, Glenn, for your UA for my Monarch photos....more to come another day. To me, they are one of the great wonders of nature.

When it comes to macro for me it is less about patience than opportunity. When I see them I’d shoot them.

Definitely an Eastern tent caterpillar, The moth they become is quite pretty, but the damage they cause can be extensive, especially to cherry, apple and birch. The hairs can also cause a very itchy rash.

Well---Joline and other beat me to it-- The tent caterpillar is a major problem and makes some messy tents in certain trees---
To me, the cater pillar is the most beautiful part of the species---- photograph them but do not touch them!

When I,lived in the Southern Tier of NY, we would have apple tree infested with them….we would go out at twilight when they are back in their tents and burn them. It was very satisfying.
