This is a composite of 5 different shots (pun sort of intended). I blew the yolk and white out through two holes punched on either end of the egg. Once I had them cleaned out I covered one of the holes with some melted wax, After mixing some tempera paints and water I used some syringes I bought from an industrial supply house to fill the eggs with various different colors. Each egg was then balanced atop an ordinary light stand. Much plastic about the place covering softboxes, diffusers, scrims, etc. I would then turn all of the lights off except for a very dim battery powered lantern and open the camera on the bulb setting. Once this was done I would fire my pellet gun at the egg (the reason I needed the lantern to better see the eggs), from about a distance of 6 feet or so, and the egg would explode release all of its surprising inner goodness. I used a Triggertrap set to detect the sound of the pellet gun firing which in turn would fire all of the strobe units and I could then release the shutter button to close the shutter. I changed the timing on the Triggertrap to change the time of the flashes firing in order to catch the egg at different points in the demolition process. Obviously, there was some trial and error involved as well as a small amount of cleanup afterward. After doing the post-processing and compositing I think it was well worth the effort.
