Inside the Smokebox

By DicksPics
And now for something completely different!

On Wednesday, I was privileged to be shown around the workshops, engine shed and yard, at Cheddleton Station, of the Churnet Valley Railway, near Leek, in North Staffordshire. I was able to talk to the incredibly enthusiastic volunteers and lovely people who work incredibly hard to maintain this wonderful railway. I was in my photographic element!

It was a very rainy, windy and cold day!!

The lead image and first two versions show the inside the firebox of an American built locomotive type S160, No. 5197.

No. 5197 was built as works no.8856 by the Lima Locomotive Company in Ohio, USA, in June 1945. Weighing 135 tons in full working order, the locomotive was exported to China in January, 1946.

The final version shows another S160 locomotive, No 6046(hopefully what No. 5197 will eventually look like!), that can be seen at Churnet Valley. It is in the final stages of being repaired after one of its cylinders was severely damaged whilst on loan to another Heritage Railway - cost of repair .... a mere 250000! - someone had their knuckles rapped!!

No. 5197 is a work in progress - I will upload more images of the many parts of this wonderful piece of engineering over the next week or so.

Many, much appreciated thanks for all votes and comments on my ‘'Towpath Walk'’ upload and, especially, to Steve(Stephen_B) for his much valued User Award.

I will visit EPZ as often as possible over the next few days - we have granddaughter Erin staying with us for three nights ………… I’'m sure she'’ll keep us busy, the little treasure!!SmileSmileSmile

Have a good weekend, folks,

RichardSmile

Quite fascinating - a part one never sees: nicely captured in fine detail, Richard.
What an interesting experience.
I remember being taken as a young lad to the North British Locomotive Works in Polmadie, Glasgow (long since defunct of course) and the abiding memory I retain is the incredible noise in the boiler makers section........the noise actually hurt one's ears.
