Into the Morning Mist - Original Version

By WeeGeordieLass
Hi Everyone,

This shot was taken one morning on the River Ganges. I think there are many ways that the image could be interpreted and presented but my processing skills (or lack of them) are letting me down. I've produced a few versions myself but have been disappointed with the results.

ErictheViking gave me a good idea to upload the original and request mods from members showing how the image could be processed and improved - I know there are some very clever and creative members so any interpretations would be much appreciated.......anything goes!

I'm going into hospital tomorrow morning so I'm hoping that when I get home in a couple of weeks I'll have some great mods to see.

Thanks everyone/

Elaine x

Sorry to hear about the kidneys, weegoearodielass I hope verything works out fine.

This is a picture tha works for me on mood rather than visual impact so the important thing is not to overdo the tonal range because you will lose that 'mistiness'.
I have added a modification (don't know if I have done it right as it is the first time I have done this), and it is mainly a slight crop, boost to contrast and adding some colour to the 'morning' feel - I have added a bit more detail with the modification.
On viewing it here, maybe the reds are overdone but you can see how it changes the picture.

This works much better for me than the previous upload, but it includes a number of problems that I mentioned last time:
- tiny dark blobs in the sky on the right, perhaps birds but it's not clear so the image would be better without them;
- dust bunnies - the most noticeable is above the headland on the right;
- the image still needs a slight rotation, about 2 clockwise - check out the reflection of the mast which should drop down vertically but is at an angle.
I do prefer the processing here, it's cooler, cleaner, without losing the delicate mystery of the haze.

Hi Elaine,I've added a modification.I have no real problem with the photograph it has lots of atmosphere,is well exposed and 'seen', you should be proud of it.For my tastes the image is maybe a little unbalanced as there is quite a bit going on in the right hand of the shot with only the boat in the left.For that reason I have cropped a little tighter to the boat to give an 8x10 image, and boosted the colour saturation a bit.Good luck with your health problems and take care.

I've uploaded a Mod - I've cleaned the sky, rotated, cropped (similarly to Stickleman's Mod) and increased Contrast to give more clarity.

Following on from the above mods and suggestions I think that reducing the amount of sky is definitely the way to go. Also I wonder if its worth flipping the image so that the hills are on the left and the boat on the right. I cant do a mod as I am on my work computer but I think it may 'read better' that way round. Of course you may consider this a mod too far.

Hi. I added a mod (wrong image first time round - please delete as I am unable to.

I felt that the image is a great image that gives off an aura of serenity however I am a lover of monochrome so I used LR4 to add various gradients to the sky and then crop and convert. I also added some grain as I felt that the shot was reminiscent of a shot taken in the days of Tmax 3200

Its a little blown out to really do a great deal with it, but I used the adjustment brush in ACR, then added the sun in the top right corner.

im photoshop less until i get my own computer back from repair but i love the base image and would love to do a mod, ill have to do one later.

maybe id turn it around to face the other way reading left to right, id add some delicate colour overlay to look more like sunrise, a bit of glow and some hanging mist over the water. you could go to town on this one

Hi Elaine
Bet you never expected this response WinkWink

I've loaded 2 mod's the first is your colour image with adjustment to the highlights and the shadows to give better separation between the lights and darks .. hopefully without loosing the misty day effect. When I did this the colours of the image strengthened however I did isolate the sea and increase the lights and darks to give the more natural separation between sky and water.

Mod 2 is a different B+W which you'll either like or hate (my wife hates it), but I wanted to show B+W doesn't have to be just a straight conversion with some colour tints.

Get well soon and I'll wait for your verdict.

Apart from all the great modifications in terms of tonality, I'd just like to pass comment that it is an exceptional example of the rule of thirds.

Hi Everyone,

I'd just like to thank everyone very, very much for all of the great mods that you've taken the time to work on and upload.

Looking at the mods has helped me tremendously and I can see how the shot can be improved by subtle changes.

It's lovely of you all to offer your help and I feel I'll be able to make the most of this image now incorporating some of your suggestions.

I'm home from hospital now and recovering slowly. Thanks for all your good wishes.
