So much detail of its face is missing behind that blurred centre - think you needed stacking for this.Sad

bricurtis - Firstly, I hear what you are saying, however, my intention was to create an isolated, shallow depth of field shot, where just the eyes pop. I was going for something different, a more artistic, pictorial image rather than a scientific or record shot of a hoverfly that we see all the time (nothing wrong with those of course). With all this in mind, I feel that I pretty much achieved what I was aiming for – EPZ felt it deserved a HC award, so I must have been on the right track.

Secondly, image stacking is something that 99 time out of 100 is done on a dead subject, indoors, with a focus rail. This shot was of a living hoverfly, outside, taken hand-held.

I'm all for image stacking, just not generally on most of my work, as I prefer to work outside on natural subjects without a tripod (like yourself).

I've marked your comment as constructive critique, although I feel the critique you gave was somewhat unwarranted.

Andy.

Seems we are on different tracks, I don't think it has an artistic look at all, but if you think you have achieved your goal, so be it.
Re EPZ awards - these are often questionable but this is not about that

Re stacking. Don't agree with your view, I know many people who stack live subjects. Some cameras will do it for you in frame bursts.

I have given an honest opinion of the image as I see it, no offence intended.
Re. Critique - you should not be able to flag that up, I have that disabled.

Just by way of clarification:

We can disable cc nominations on our own uploads. It would therefore be for BydoR9 to disable cc on comments here. As far as I know no member can prevent other members from nominating their comments if cc is enabled on the portfolio in question.

Hope that helps.

A correction to the above, it looks as though the option to disable cc nominations on comments on your own pf has disappeared. But I don't think it has ever been possible to prevent nomination, even of your own comments, on someone else's pf.

You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, that is without question. Beyond the technical aspects of photography, whether someone likes or dislikes an image is purely subjective anyway, not everyone likes the same.

In terms of anyone having any sort of opinion whether EPZ's image awards are usually questionable falls under the same banner of a subjective opinion.

In terms of image stacking - I stand corrected if more people are shooting live subjects with stacking in mind than I realised.

Regards
Andy.
