It's......S H O W T I M E

By arhb
After a 20year break, I returned to Santa Pod Raceway to watch some drag racing over the bank holiday.
Picture is the Showtime Funny Car, built and driven by a team who were high profile even when I first went to watch drag racing in the early 80's.

Fot those who dont know, a 'funny car' is a top fuel dragster, with a shortened wheel base, and a carbon-fibre body that losely resembles a street car body.
Top fuel nitro-methanol burning dragsters are now producing 8,000bhp, and completing 1/4mile(or new/safe NHRA equiv) in under 4 seconds, reaching speeds in excess of 300mph.
The funny cars run the same distance about 1 - 1.5seconds slower, with speeds close to 300mph.

There are some great you tube videos showing the latest top fuel drag racing, but they fail to represent the noise created by these machines.
You learn to love the smell of burnt rubber, and nitro-methane -
More to come this week - thanks for looking.

Top shot. Great piece of panning.
Many, many years ago my brother used to go there and race a dragster he made himself.

I can remember Santa Pod when there were no buildings there!

I too was a part of a drag racing team in the distant past. A top fueler at that, although they were called 'A' dragsters at the time The name changed about half way through my second season.

Great shot by the way, although I'm not sure about the darkness on the RHS?
