Inspired by silverbells's post of a sunnier and more interesting pier... ( here )

There's an ancient joke from "Round the Horne" - "Mr Gruntfuttock - if your road is as long as you say, and hasn't got one, I suggest you contact your local council."

It was a cold day. And at over a mile long, with no conveniences open between the shore and the cafe at the end, I was considering the lack of fellow-occupants of the pier, and the "through the railings" option.

However, although I also found suitcases at the end, they seemed to have come off a ferry - see versions!

On balance, I think Erica had a better day out than I did - but it's one of those things which I've done, and now never need to do again!

(For the less ambulatory - there is a train to the ned, as you cna see. It costs a lot more than a walking ticket!)

The only other pier I know that is long enough to need a train is at Hythe, Hants. You can catch a ferry to Southampton from the end and there is the most folorn of all waiting rooms at the end of the pier. I have an image of it here . Your images capture the desolate feel of these piers which make for a different sort of photography to the pleasure pier
