It's a Shambles!

By TrevBatWCC
Taken on the EPZ meet in York a month ago, in the most famous street in York. It's not really a shambles! The name Shambles is thought to derive from ‘Shammel’, an anglo-saxon word for the shelves which were a prominent feature of the open shop-fronts. It's one of the best preserved medieval streets in the world, and was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of William the Conqueror in 1086. Many of the buildings on the street today date back to the late fourteenth and fifteenth century (around 1350-1475). It was a street of butchers’ shops and houses, many complete with a slaughterhouse at the back of the premises, ensuring a ready supply of fresh meat. The meat was hung up outside the shops and laid out for sale on what are now the shop window-bottoms. In V3 you may just recognise a fellow EPZer! Wink No prizes for guessing who, though...
My last upload before Christmas, as I'll be off up to Scotland for the Christmas period in a couple of days (yippee!), so getting really excited now Smile
Again, hope you all have a great Christmas and a very Happy New Year, though I will be back on here before next year arrives!

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas, Trev. You will be back in time for my special upload on January 1st, then! But it hails from my book case, not York . . . Smile

Nice varients of York and lovely to see the trees decorated for Christmas.
We were there in mid September, the first time we have visited York ever and probably the only time. It was short and my
photo's were few so it is nice to see yours. I just wish we'd had more time on our visit but we did get to Whitby,Goathland,
Wales with all the castles,Port Meirion, Harlech and lots of places around the Midlands.
Wishing you a special and Happy 2012 look forward to seeing many more of your lovely shots……
