It's a strange life!

By Ade_Osman
Broad Bodied Chaser-Libellula depressa (Immature Male)

It's a strange life isn't it!..........There we were yesterday, me and the wife out high up in the hills at a location we know that's usually good for some rarish butterflies. When we decided we'd had enough because up until that point we hadn't had a sniff of anything other than a few Small Heath's. When all of a sudden just as were walking back to the car, this dragonfly turns up and presents itself just a few yards away from where we were standing. Not only that, he seems to posing and almost saying to us both "Look at me, here I am, come and take a picture of me!" Well neither one of us didn't want to not take him up on his very kind offer so we both sat down and duly filled our memory cards of images of this fella.
What made it strange, is the this particular location we were at, is miles away from any ponds or rivers that were aware of, it involves a long arduous walk uphill (for me anyway) and we'd both more or less given up hope of capturing anything decent.
After what seemed at least 20 minutes with this dragonfly, he decided to fly off to pastures new and we both walked back to the car chatting about how "karma" must have played a role in knowing that we'd both worked hard climbing up this hill and how we had nothing of any worth to show for it! As I said it's a strange life, but that's wildlife for you......

Regards.....Ade

............and not only that but it landed on a great perch.....they always go for an old piece of weed for me.

Great shots and write up.

How do you distinguish an immature male from a female? I know the males colour up after starting yellow but is there any other thing to look out for.

Cheers

Males go blue as you know, females have a tendency to go an olive colour and get much fatter and rounded on the tail with the yellow running up either side of the edge, similar to the males....
