If you remove the pipe this was the face on my favourite cigarettes many years ago Players, the logo was the head od a sailor on the flap of the packet and inside a life belt on the front. Hardly a life saving thing smoking.

I had a uniform similar to this... the collar (pale blue) was tied around the waist under the jacket, the silk black silk under the edge of the collar, lanyard (rope) were separate items being tied in front with a black tape in a special bow, so for me this image is very evocative. Great portrait... thanks for sharing.

I really like this! Technically it strikes me as being perfect and it is so wonderfully evocative. If there is such a thing as 'poised spontaneity' (I know what I mean in my muddled way!!) then this a lovely example. It also brings back happy memories of my pipe smoking days of thirty years ago.
