Jazz Night

By Merlin_k
Taken at a jazz evening at Papa Cinos in Northampton. No digital manipulation of this one. To set the scene for the technical difficulty of this shot. I was on a small table in a corner. The camera back was pressed against the wall in order to get far enough away from the glass so I couldn't use the view finder. I was on manual focus to get the glass in focus, so guess work was needed. Then to get the entire glass in required very careful positioning on top of my iphone and my wallet (I can't tell you how many photos either don't have the top or the bottom of the glass).

I worked though, didn't it?

You say this is straight from the camera and as such it could do with being a bit sharper. I just used the straightforward "sharpen" filter in CS5 and the glass immediately stands out.
Other than that, I guess it's a question of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. The background's very busy but that could be what you're after. In which case, it's worked well.
The obvious alternative (and I'm pretty sure you'll have already thought of this!) is a square crop which, I think, works well but may not be what you're looking for.
I'll upload a mod. anyway.

Not sure if this has helped or not ! ?

I changed the white balance, corrected the verticals and sharpened.
