Jonathan and Jonathan

By mrswoolybill
A closer view of one of the West Road Cemetery volunteers... (This is a different frame, not cropped from last week's upload.)
I suggested that Jonathan lean nonchalantly against the headstone, then I read the inscription...
It's a curious memorial. Various suggestions were made last week, but I think the 'two wives' theory is a red herring. I read the inscription as 'Jonathan Miles, who died November 6th 1898, the beloved husband of Mary Beavan... ' Otherwise his date of death isn't given.
But the original wording wasn't planned to take account of her details being added later when she died and was buried in the same plot, hence the awkwardness.
The really puzzling thing in England at that time is the prominence given to her family name at the top of the stone.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

A fine character study of Johnathan against the beautifully crafted headstone.

I think the prominence of the family name applied to plots that were meant to house multiple bodies.
Just a theory, no evidence to back it up...

A very expensive, ornate looking stone there, Moira.
I wonder how long the next occupant will have lived?

Very well photographed.

Excellent portrait Moira.

The gravestone...very unusual but she outlived poor hubby by a good number of years and wonder if when family erected the gravestone they placed their favoured name on top? Families are very odd organisms and it looks like the inscriptions are all of the same time frame.

Get to it chief investigator Moira! WinkWink

Yes, that could be taken wrong. If you were to quickly read it. He looks a happy volunteer. I wonder if the name Miles is in big print on the other side.
