Just one traghetto (of many)

By GwailoAngMo
Want a ride in a gondola but on the cheap?

It is not exactly the full Ritz experience but the traghetto is a gondola of sorts. It simply ferries you across the Grand Canal, but is a fun experience.

I took one from Pescaria to Santa Sofia several times during one visit to Venice and had the luxury of being the only one on board, simply because there was a large number on the other side wanting to make the journey.

Sadly the number of traghetto services seems to be limited now to only two from about eight during the time I have been visiting Venice. The service used to be even more widespread in the past when the Rialto was the only bridge crossing the Grand Canal. Look out for small streets leading to the grand canal called Calle del traghetto, they are more numerous than the traghetto.

This particular service served Fondamenta del Vin (so called because barges carrying wine moored alongside it Paolo Giordani) on the far side to Riva del Carbon (so called because rafts carrying charcoal used to be unloaded there Paolo Giordani again).
