khalkis bridge

By jocas
Khalkis bridge spans the Euripus Strait which separates the island of Evia and it's capital city of khalkis from the mainland of Greece . it was first bridged in 411 BC with a wooden bridge. In the time of Justinian the fixed bridge was replaced with a movable structure. The Turks replaced this once again with a fixed bridge. In 1856, a wooden swing bridge was built; in 1896, an iron swing bridge, and in 1962, the existing "sliding bridge"; the construction works of the 19th century destroyed the most part of the medieval castle built across the bridge.
A special tidal phenomenon takes place in the strait, as strong tidal currents reverse direction once every six hours, creating strong currents and maelstroms.the bridge opens once a day at slack tide between the hours of midnight and 4 am ( to avoid disturbing the road traffic)the bridge is 39.3 m wide and slides back into a recess under the road .
we were very lucky with an early passage time and had a large audience( always a little nerve wracking ) -unlike last time at 3.30 am .
a couple of the uploads are trying to show the fierce tide which I didn't catch too well.

thank you all for the v's and c's on the last upload and a big thank you toFred (badgerfred) and Ju (jubarney ) for their generous awards.
