This is a poignant slice of the warrior's life. I tried a bit of selective coloring to try to illustrate the little bright spot in the day that he offers.

I like the idea of this, I think it would have more impact shot from eye level with the subject rather than from above & maybe a couple of steps to your left to show more of the helicopter. You could also lose the guitar case as it doesn't add to the shot. Again a mono version would work along with a little added grain for grit.

I think this is superb. A very compelling subject and well shot, too.

Black and white is an option but I think there's no real need for it, here, since the tones are already rather muted. (And I really don't like the selective colour version, I'm afraid, but that's a technique that rarely does anything for me.)

For me, the guitar case is OK as, although it doesn't add to the shot, it is a natural place for it to be. I also like the viewpoint you've taken, which allows the soldier, the concrete block and the helicopter to be arranged naturally. One thing I would suggest, though, is to be wary of that extended leg. Because you're in close with a wide-angle lens, that leg has been emphasized and looks unnaturally long; it would probably look more natural if he'd bent it at the knee and rested the sole of his boot on that rock.

thanks for all the ideas and suggestions, I'm still trying to figure out how to get the selective coloring right and monochrome filter adds since I have to pretty much digitally add any sort of filter work (impossible to find a camera place that ships out here).

As far as the unnaturally long leg, it did bug me a bit, but I've always gone for the photojournalist style of not having anything posed, I'd rather have the subject not know im getting a photo of them and have the complete geniune look.

For Correcting the unnaturally long leg, would a larger frame originial shot help with that? and then just crop the shot to the size? I really haven't read up too much on wide angle lenses effects that in depth. Or would the leg being more center lense still have the distorted look?


Also FYI, I am posting another photo I had taken of Mr. Charlie Ross at this same event.

Fair enough. The guy's looking at you so is clearly aware of your presence, which meant that I wasn't sure to what extent the photo was posed.

The appearance of the leg is caused by the perspective of your viewpoint, not by the lens per se. As such, it depends only on where you're standing. So, if you'd used an even wider lens and cropped, you would get a photo that would be identical, in this respect. The way to avoid the elongated leg would have been to move backwards (changing your viewpoint and, therefore, the perspective) and use a longer lens to keep the same framing.

The centre of the lens is relevant in other cases. For example, barrel distorsion (rectangles getting bowed out like barrels), chromatic aberration (bright-coloured haloes around high-contrast edges) and vignetting (darkness towards the outside of the frame) tend to be less severe in the centre of the frame. Likewise, many lenses give sharper focus in the centre of the frame.
