King Cotton

By backbeat
In the height of the industrial revolution, Burnley in Lancashire was the biggest cotton cloth producer in the world, and was dubbed 'King Cotton'. This weaving shed is typical of the ones where thousands of women and children (and some men) worked long hours and in deafening noise..

All are now gone now except this, which is why the only places to work around here are either McDonalds or the Pound Shop...

Queen St Mill is the last surviving steam powered mill, some say in the world, and is now a museum that is well worth a visit if you're in the area..

Thanks for looking

I can only just begin to image what it must of been like here, the noise, the hustle and bustle and the comaraderie that must have been there, even in times of hardship - thanks for a glimpse of a bygone age Phil!

I love the old looking equipment, so facinating to sel all the over head drive pullys and belts, When I first sarted going to a Trade school in 1960 some of the older macines and lathes were pully driven, brings back memories, now everything is Computer generated, how weve advanced in such a short time, would love to see some more shots, Chuck

I remember a folk singer called Roger Westbrook used to sing King Cotton at the Wellsprings on a Wednesday back in the 80's when I was a 6th former.

powerful song - one line was

"Where life and death mean the self same thing"

Glad they've got at least one left anyway!
