Views 78 Unique 42 Award Shortlist

By Emilpix
Each summer I am drawn to a local river in the hope of seeing at close quarters and photographing this most colourful and often elusive species. Often too such visits result in nothing but a fleeting glance, an electric blue flash against the varied river's backdrop. Sometimes though success and I am able to enjoy the beauty of Britain's avifauna at its brilliant best.

This is an excellent shot Mick, and would likely win some awards in the main gallery

good stuff, other,s should look and learn what a good bird image looks like. I often see Kingfishers at our local fishing ponds, two pairs this year. to photograph or to fish! Being a bit skittish, the Kingfishrs, as you well know, are not easy subjects and a well visited pond is not ideal.

What a great shot of one of our most beautiful birds.

The mod was not really needed for such a fine image, so all I done was to play with a few of the colours and brought the branch fully into the picture so the eye doesn't wander out of the image.

Wonderful image.

Many thanks for the kind comments, they are very much appreciated. I am gratified that I might have done justice to my favourite species of UK bird.

Worth reposting in the main gallery, I think!

To win such praise from paulbroad is, in my book, a real mark of success with this kind of picture. Well done!

I was disappointed to see this in the Critique Gallery for the one reason it's a super shot and deserves to be in the main Gallery!

I apologise dark-lord. I am not a regular on the site and the differences between the various locations on it are something of a mystery to me. Though a keen amateur with a camera I suffer from a lack of confidence in the quality of my images so seek advice and critique to enable me to do justice to my subjects. I have another in the main gallery now and another in the Kingfisher group. Thank you for your kind comment.

The trouble with the main gallery is that you get no useful comments! I've been trying a few shots lately and get nothing but 'wonderful image' if I get anything. The number of votes does give an idea how generally appealing an image is, but I look through other images and votes given. Voting often, in fact usually, is heavily influence by content rather than quality or even composition.

This is an excellent image, but serves to show others in this section what such a picture should look like. As such, very useful.

I note in the general gallery that some shots which I have sold regularly in libraries score very few votes. That is because the content lends itself to a different market - it illustrates a point or issue, thus having editorial merit without necessarily stand alone merit.

All depends on what you want but general back patting or a mutual admiration society can do the ego a lot of good, but not the actual technical mastery because people think their image is good when it may not be so.

Thanks Paul, with you all the way on the last paragraph. Of course it is rewarding to have one's efforts recognised and who would turn praise away, particularly if it should lead to sales being achieved. I recognise ability in other's efforts but always find fault with my own. Independent and honest critique best serves to bolster my confidence. I appreciate all comments and helpful criticism. Thank you all.
