This is some detail of a box mangle in the laundry at Kingston Lacy, said to have been invented in the 17th century.
It was a large and expensive affair and required a fair bit of labour to operate.
It was often used by very large households, commercial laundries or by self-employed mangle women who served their local area.
Nowadays the word mangle suggests a wringing device for removing water from laundry, but the box mangle was used for pressing and smoothing, and was an alternative to hot ironing for larger items.
I'll show the larger picture/the whole mangle next time.
Many thanks for all the votes, comments and awards given to my Mallow picture. They are very much appreciated.
Pamela.
