Knife Angel.

By lifesnapper
Hi all and many thanks for your great comments and votes etc, on the last of my wedding series and indeed, the whole series. It really is so very much appreciated.

And now for a far more serious subject. It's very rare that I photograph someone else's art but, in this case I felt compelled to do so.
This 27ft tall sculpture by Alfie Bradley, currently stands in the Rochester Cathedral gardens. It took 4yrs to complete and is made up of over 100,000 knives and other such weapons, that were handed in during the knife amnesty. The theme runs through into the crypt where many photo's of knife crime victims can be seen. Just a fraction of those who have lost their lives to this senseless epidemic. Just over a week ago in Maidstone, Kent, there was a fatal stabbing which, as far as I'm aware, didn't even make national news. You can check it out online.

Maybe a picture on the front page of every news paper showing the inside of a small cramped prison cell with bed's stacked against a wall and a toilet pan in the corner shared with two or three other men, and with the headline: This is your life for the next seventeen to twenty years, may help as a deterrent. If it were down to me, I would include public humiliation as part of their punishment.
Sadly, the relatives of those who have died, are committed to a life sentence without reprieve.

A very full narrative about this very original sculpture, one which one wishes never needed to be thought of, never mind created.
But what a legacy it is to the horrific and senseless spate of knife crimes of recent years.
You have covered the subject so completely, including images of some of those who lost their lives.
Many congrats on covering the subject to well for the rest of us, John.

Thank you Ronnie. And yes, it's a shame that it needed to be created at all.

I'm probably wrong but I believe the average term served for murder is seven years, hardly a deterrent. Sad With very few exceptions murder should have a mandatory true life sentence, that's what the victims families have to suffer.

Until society can fix the cause of this extreme violence we need to deter it. More Police, build more prisons ( keep builders employed), more Wardens in prisons ( less unemployed) and less likelyhood of being a victim.

Great artwork and write up, but very sad.

I'm not sure deterrents are the only answer either, there is a disjoint between cause and effect in young people.......smoking, drugs, extreme activities..... Perhaps they should be made to sit in on surgery, funerals etc of victims as well. Compulsary Service Overseas or something similar wouldn't harm either.

An excellent and informative narrative with photos to bring the message home.
Amazingly my sister/brother-in-law have never mentioned The Knife Angel when
I've been down in Kent nor did I know of it's existence.
Sadly there is no easy answer to the problem - for those who hand in knives there are
many who never will in the name of protection.

I heard on the radio the other day that 'they' are thinking of putting 'emergency knife wound packs' around areas so people can help injured and give first about some extra police to prevent it in the first place!
How can this be happening, its on the radio daily ....almost becoming routine........

Wow John... I had heard London wasn't`t the safe old city it used to be ..But then again what city is now ? Drugs like meth and opioids
are out of control and until that epidemic is stemmed the violence will carry on . I agree most heartedly we have to get far tougher on the criminals that make/ sell/ and import the drugs and those that carry out violent acts.
Just try dealing drugs in countries Saudi Arabia, Bali .. Thailand etc. and see what happens to you there!
Best reportage I have seen on this sad sculpture John,
regards walt
