After processing the Magpie Lodge starscape a couple of days ago I felt inclined to have a go at this image that I took last year whilst on safari in Addo Game reserve South Africa. I recall hearing Jackels and Lions whilst taking this series of images - it is not an experience I am ever likely to forget. Thankfully I was quite safe on the right side of a high voltage electric fence (left of shot).
I'm not sure what the origin of the light pollution is at the horizon line. Indeed, I am not convinced this is light pollution per se - the lodge is a very long way from an urban areas and this is one of the few locations I have stayed where it has been possible to see a degree of nebula cloud (or very dense stars) within the Milky Way core with the naked eye. Much of the landscape is very dry and dusty and on this evening low level cloud had gathered on a number of the hills in the distance.
This is a stacked a blended image. The stars are stacked from 15 light and 15 dark frames using Starry Landscape Stacker. The FG was a long exposure (5min at f2.4 @ ISO 800) and blended in PS.
