La Corbière Lighthouse

By TrevBatWCC
The next stop off on our coach tour around the coast of Jersey was at Corbière Point, which at the extreme south-western point of Jersey in St. Brelade. The name means "a place where crows gather", deriving from the word corbîn meaning crow. However, seagulls have long since displaced the crows from their coastal nesting sites. The rocks and extreme tidal variation around this stretch of Jersey's coast have been treacherous for navigation and La Corbière has been the scene of many shipwrecks.
The lighthouse stands at 19 metres high and the lamp stands 36 metres above high water spring tides. It was lit on 24th April 1874 for the first time, and was the first lighthouse in the British Isles to be built of concrete.
Like Elizabeth Castle at St Helier shown in my earlier upload, it is accessible on foot only at low tide from the shore by way of a 400 metre long causeway. There is an alarm to warn visitors to clear the causeway as the tide rises; still, there have been casualties among the unwary or unlucky!

Raw images processed in Adobe Camera Raw, tweaked in Nik Collection’s Viveza 2 and Photoshop Elements 14.

Thanks again to everyone for your votes & comments on my previous uploads, it really is appreciated and encouraging Smile

Looks lovely and cool Trevor, could just do with a dip in the sea. An excellent image and I suppose there are foolhardy people who ignore the warning and have to be rescued, like those who try to cross the Holy Island crossing after safe crossing times.

Lovely lighthouse. Very glad you managed to get back safely without being caught by the incoming tide.
