El Castillo de San Carlos de la Barra es una construcción colonial, ubicada en la "isla" de San Carlos, en el estado Zulia, Venezuela. Fue construido con rocas calizas, traídas desde la Isla de Toas, en el siglo XVII en la entrada de la barra de Maracaibo. La fortaleza tenía por objeto proteger el paso que conecta el Lago de Maracaibo con el Golfo de Venezuela. En la época en que se construyó Maracaibo había sido atacada y saqueada varias veces por piratas y la construcción del castillo pretendía disponer de una verdadera defensa del territorio que evitara la entrada de filibusteros a tierra firme.

There is a similar castella in st. Augustine, Florida ( I have visited) ---this is a most impressive image, great darks and lights and texture

Extremely clever capture with leading lines from the foreground to the dark door creating intrigue, what's beyond? A strong monochrome finish with high contrast and strong dark lines, gives character to the image. Well done
