Landing

By ZInaNMooner
Today I set myself a new target, taking photos of birds while still in flight. It's not easy at all, specially these little ones, they are so fast. I thought that it would be easier to catch them landing or taking of, not easy to but at least you know where they are going.
For this shot I use tripod but found difficult to get the right spot to focus, if you have any tips please say.
The focus on this shot is not perfect but for a first attempt I'm quite pleased, hope you like it to.

Thank you all for your clicks and tips.

Nice shot and a good start I found the same as others set it to manual focus and as in your shot set the focus just above and beyond the wood then it is hit and miss the other way is to follow the bird and pan with it have had more success this way than the other

Super first attempt, excellent composition. Try pre focusing just behind a point where you expect the Blue Tit to land and get ready with the cable release and shoot a burst of shots, then re adjust the focus if necessary. Lots of trial and error, good fun trying as too.

Cracking first attempt, very well timed.. so difficult getting the focus... as mentioned above, any success I've had with action shots of the dog, (thanks for your kind comments), have been to turn AF off and manually focus on where you think/hope the subject will appear!

My hubby 'Nikontuk' has been trying to get a bird in flight for ages and just hasn't managed to get a keeper yet, looking at this you should be very proud of it and judging by some of the comments and tips offered, things can only get better. Bird photography is such a challenge, well done and keep it up.

good start its a nice shot even with the movement if you are feeding them go for manual focus and set the focus where you are trying to get them to land keep the bird feed in one place with a landing point just behind it get a hands free or a lead to trigger and get a cheap spot light for extra shutter speed Owen

You got the classic wings spreadout like everyone wants. I'm no expert but my best approach to this is to focus on where they seem to be landing and wait for a cooperative bird.

For Hummingbirds, a similar thing, I focus on a flower they might like...among many...and just wait. Patience is a virtue for this approach.
