Landscape #9 On the Altiplano: Peru

By handlerstudio
Again digging deep into my archives, and again with the camera with which I converted from film to digital, years back. The is on the train (arrow gauge railroad) that travels from Cusco to Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca (the lake children love to say), the highest navigable lake in the world. This train is an all day trip of about 350 km. There is an observation car in the back of the train where the photographers hang out, and from which this photo was taken. My daughter was adopted from Peru (in 1990) and we have a group of five families with Peruvian adopted kids in the general Philadelphia area. Three of the families traveled to Peru with our kids when they were old enough to appreciate being there, and young enough to still like traveling with their parents. On this trip, the kids were more or less invisible, the parents, as Anglos, stood out.

The scenery on this train ride, much of it in country too high and too dry for trees to grow, was spectacular. In places, the Andes were on either side of the tracks. At the highest point of the trip, a few hours out of Puno, the train stopped at the highest altitude of the run, about 14,400 feet, and there were Aymara Indians selling textile goods....beautiful wool and alpaca hats, sweaters gloves, jackets.....for really low prices and really high quality.....we all bought stuff. We knew that this is how many people make a living. As a reminder, this is the second highest mountain range in the world.

My own international travels have been specific and limited.....and I think Peru is probably the most beautiful place I have ever seen. And, after leaving Cusco, we did not see any private cars. The people, outside of the big cities, cannot afford to buy them.

So interesting to read about this zone you are traveling. Must be really way up high when we see not a single gnarly little tree. TG

What a wonderful and most interesting write-up to accompany this fine image, Peter. I hope we may see some images of your daughter some time, the Peruvians are such a beautiful race of people.

This is spectacular, Peter - I didn't need to say that, I know - the image speaks for itself.
What a wonderful journey that must have been.
Thank you for sharing the interesting narrative, too.

Love the train snaking away and that wonderful scene to the left Peter. I've a number of friends in Peru. The Lewis family. Their forefathers emigrated from Wales in the early 1900's looking for a better life.

Excellent image
