Well that's the Acholi for butterfly and this was taken near Gulu in the heart of the Acholi homeland and a place I must return to as soon as I can.

The Acholi language is one of the Luo or Lwo languages which trace the migration of those people a few centuries ago across East Africa, first south and then eastwards with groups dropping off along the way. Their eventual furthest point east was in Kenya around Kisumu. They make up one of the major groups in Kenya and President Obama's father came from there.

Names starting with O are very common in any Luo speaking area which makes various American politicians' attempts to point to the similarity of Obama and Osama either malicious or just ignorant. In Gulu then names like Okello, Okot etc. were very common and the students at the school I taught at found it most amusing that one of the teachers, from Ireland, was called O'Byrne.

I realise none of this has anything to do with butterflies. Thank you for indulging me.

Brilliant photo with a beautiful shallow depth of field. Love the amount of detail you have brought out in the image.

It's that 'nothing to do with butterflies" or whatever that makes your information interesting. I wish this was pushed just a hair further into the frame, but nice and sharp where it needs to be.

(Today went very well and it looks like I'm on the list!)

A beautiful photo Mike...and thanks for the information....

About cycling....
Mike, I am a serious cyclist. One of the things I do is make sure that cars see me and give me space. Never ride near the curb. If i am on a two lane road, I ride close to the center of the right force cars to wait and pull out to pass me. Riding on the sidewalk,if you are an adult, is not legal. In PA, by law, cars are supposed to give riders 4 feet. My guess is that drivers have no idea of that. If a car passes me to close, I feel that I allowed it.

That's a radical crop there, which is fine with me as its what you wanted. Great shot. The background info does actually augment the photo, because it tells you something about the photographer which in turn tells you something about the photo.
Great detail and narrative Mike. You are a hive of information. 😉

Mike so beautiful and what a beautiful butterfly. I have taken a picture of this butterfly in Stoke on Trent but it was in a butterfly house.
Lovely image where the butterfly should be. Indulge yourself as often as you wish Mike. Debs
