Last Night's Moon

By KingArthur
After loads of reading and research, I recently went for the Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 super zoom lens, being much my type of lens for general all round shooting. Naturally, when you're sifting through such equipment reviews you come across an abundance of pros and cons - one of the alleged downsides of this lens seems to be image softness at max focal length (400mm). With this in mind, once the lens landed on my doorstep, I decided to put the lens to the test using my method as to sharpness.

Last night I fitted the Tammy to the D500 and, in the comfort of my terrace, I took a few handheld shots of the moon at maximum focal length. While shooting, what struck me was the pleasing diagonal line of side lighting falling onto the moon offering some wonderful craters which, in turn, would definitely prove to be beneficial in testing the lens's resolution and sharpness. I used ISO 640 to allow me to shoot at f/8 with a good enough shutter speed of 1/640 sec coupled with the Tamron's VC to avoid any blur. On seeing the results, I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised with the Tammy's sharpness at 400mm, also bearing in mind that this is a handheld shot. Quite happy also to disprove many of the cons I read as regards lens sharpness at maximum focal length - this simple test worked for me.

Hope you find the moon image to your liking, viewing large should give you a better idea of the level of sharpness of the much criticized Tamron 18-400mm lens. The lens definitely works for me.

Enjoy your weekend,
Joe Smile

Your test was obviously very well executed Joe and you sharpness in your image is obviously profound. I am sure you are pleased with your results and I wish you many more sharp Images.
