Kookaburras are terrestrial tree kingfishers of the genus Dacelo native to Australia and New Guinea.

The name comes from the Wiradjuri language: guuguubarra (onomatopoeic of its call).

Kookaburras are found in all sorts of habitats ranging from humid forests to arid savannas, as well as Mullum Mullum Creek in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne as there are tall trees and a running creek.
