i like the position of the model and her expression and activity make for a nice modern study.

technically i would have preferred to see the barrel distortion in the horizon removed. there are several ways to deal with this in Photoshop. Barrel distortion is quite common in budget zoom lenses and gets worse as the lens is tilted downwards but im very surprised is apparent in a prime 50mm.

compositionally it would have been stronger if you had taken a lower view point and broke the horizon with the models head to the level of the mouth or below the shoulders.

i still think its rather nice and she looks so natural and comfortable

I like this. While I agree with Newmanp to a certain extent on this, the composition can work both ways. This actually breaks rules and that can't be a bad thing if its aesthetically pleasing. And for me, it is. I like the processing on this too. The distortion IS a surprise on a prime like this though. Shame about that, but like it all the same. Nice shot

You should let us know the make of this lens, - the barrel distortion is really bad (curved horizon).

Might be a combo of lens and shooting down, - might have been a better outcome if you had shot from her head level.

Loaded a mod with distortion removed, sharpened (remember to do this after you re size for the web), and cropped off centre.

Hey Guys,

Thanks a lot for the comments, they are much appreciated. I know this doesn't adhere to the rules, but I liked the look of it when I was quickly scanning through my pictures.

As for the lens, it is a Sony 50mm f1.4 (between 240 and 300 approx). I've never noticed this effect on my other shots, but I'll have alook through and see if others have the same distortion.

Its likely the angle David, as you tilting down, - but if not, then get the lens checked out, - it has a decent reputation.
