Lavatera Love

By pamelajean
Firstly, I was overwhelmed by your kind User Awards on my "Garden Gift", and grateful to CarolG for identifying the hybrid tea rose that I inherited. Thanks go to Lucien, Eileen, Ed, Netta, Carol, Maureen and Jane.

I've been in Winchester for 2 years now, but when on Hayling Island I had a wonderful lavatera which was aspiring to be a tree, and I had to chain it up to the garden shed because it grew so tall. I loved it so much. Then, one winter, it died. So I treated myself to another one for my new garden here and it is doing really well.

This is a re-work of an old image of the previous plant, so its beauty lives on.
The Fuji S7000 macro is so good that even after having it stolen in Spain, I bought another second-hand one.

This is amazingly beautiful, partly down to the colour balance, that strong but perfectly controlled pink against the greyish green background with its hints of soft pink, partly due to the overhead view that isolates the cluster from any context or visible means of support. They are floating, or flying. I'm seeing explorers, with the buds as two look-outs or navigators leading the way and the leaves as oars or wings.
I think you've placed the subject in the frame according to the overall size including the projecting leaves, for me that gives a bit too much space at the bottom compared with the top. I want to crop of 30-40% of the space below that pointed leaf. But that's a very minor matter.

A beautifully captured image.
For future reference, a piece of Lavateria can just be pushed into the ground and it will root, you might also spot other varieties you might like for your garden.

MOIRA: You're right about my placement, but I think your suggested crop could work well.

CHRISTINE: When my other one died, it had no leaves or shoots, just a stem. Anyway, thankyou for that information. I have seen white ones, but find the pink more attractive.

great colour combo and selection but it does seem to be floating in mid-air. Have you tried adding shadows to give the shot depth? Just a thought hope you don;t mind :O)
