Let's Take it Back to the Old School

By TommyStr
..a quick break from the India shots. Might not leave it up, just a fun weekend upload.

Taken at Blu Jaz cafe a friday night in November, after a b-boy (breakdance) battle which probably gave this grand old man some inspiration Smile

Cheers

this is the kind of photography we hardly see on epz but that attracks everyone's attention in a newspaper or in a Magnum book. It says more than a thousand landscapes. There's a lot of energy in this, sexual energy too, stressed by the guy holding his belt. Don't take it off here. I know, the vote count hurts. But it is good. Bert

Can't really improve on Bert's comments above. I think it's great. Leave it up!

Yes, please leave it up - Geraint said it all - very appealing shot Tommy. You're never too old to feel your oats!

ha... skipped this when seeing the thumb in the gallery. luckily I went to see what you have been up to, and stumbled across it again. Fully agree with Bert. it's a tremendous photo, which - from the thumb can be easily mistaken for a silly party snapshot. but it is really much better than that. It literally breaths life. The old man completely sucks up all attention. his looks - that hat, showing just enough of his face, his shabby pants, his naked upper body with that sun teint giving away what kind of t-shirt he wears during the day - and his body movement - not upto par anymore with the breakdancing boys, but certainly not without a certain grace and cool - really give the photo something special. The youngsters around him are less interesting, but need to be there as their gestures show the mood and atmosphere (even tried a square crop by cropping the clapping hands on the lhs out, but they need to be in there).
It's outstanding as it is now. you could desaturate the red on the t-shirt a bit, and darken the people in the bg a bit, and it might improve the photo somewhat, but this is a good example of a photo where it is wise to ask yourself "do I really want to temper with this ?"
Raw emotions and authenticity... they'll win hands down from technical perfection (and PSed perfection) anytime. Top work Tommy

You do realize though that 3 weeks in a row might lead fellow epz'ers to believe that we are engaged in a passionate relationship and that I might be slightly biased, don't you ?

LOL..even my girlfriend will start asking questions, so give it to Nic!

I tried the square crop too, but I also figured the clapping hands and all needs to be there. The one time I brought my camera out drinking a half-naked old man with a cool hat steals the show..lucky Smile thanks for the long comment

thank you Anne & Nic
