Great spot, Edward. That's one weird lichen. Like the colour and pattern. Not sure if it would benefit from cropping the dark stripe off the bottom? Nice work.

Cheers Steve - thought long and hard about cropping - I very rarely crop. But seeing as it was the edge of the drain, I thought I'd leave it in.

Wow - thats great. Love the colours and texture, looks almost like a coral to me. Might have to agree about the potential cropping of the stripe at the bottom but thats me just being fussy. Fantastic. Click.

+ve: Really good colours and textures

-ve: There is a bit of the yellow lichen(?) close to the centre, which is obviously more raised than the rest and is therefore not in the plane of focus (lol). It's not noticable on the small version but is a little distracting on the large one. I also tend to agree about the bottom.

Love the range of colours in this shot. Personally I like the dark strip along the bottom it gives me a feeling that something else in down there just waiting to come up and the lichen is just to attract you there.

If this was cropped I would be in raptures...seriously the patterns, the colours are fanflippintastic, the subject is almost immaterial...it's a click, but could have been the very first Caustic Macro Award winner.

Cracking image, but I have to agree with everyone about the cropping.

I've tried this type of shot, and it's not easy.

Clearly I need to upgrade my camera so I have the mega pixels to crop! It's one of those images that I felt needed some context, hence the edge of the drain. As it's more of an abstract, then maybe the crop would have been more appropriate.

So do I delete and crop and repost or do I leave . . . well seeing as I clicked on the m button anyway, I'll leave it as is.

Thanks for the second class award Keith - two nearly made it awards in two days - must be on a cusp.

Amazing shot Edward!

Rare that these shots are anything more than a messy palette of colours, but this really has a sharpness and detail that lifts it out of the ordinary!

Tim

Ewan - thanks for messing about . . . I had a bit of a play myself but found it hard to get a good yellow without destroying the rust. You seem to have pulled it off.

Thanks Tim. Glad you like it.

This a very appealing subject. Great colour and texture, and I like your original idea of leaving in the edge of the pipe. However I do think the cropped versions work better as an abstract shot.
I've tried a different crop to see if you like it - I moved the large yellow lichen further from the centre and took away a bit of the right side too. I only have MS Photo Editor here at work, so I couldn't do much!

Tims comment prompted me to open this one. Glad I did. It actually does look like a painters pallette. Great colour. Paul

I have to agree with the others regarding the crop Edward but otherwise, as you know, it's a great image.

Feeling fine Anne. Tried to edit with two different PC's and browsers but it wouldn't let me edit.

Sorry for messing your comments up Edward.

excellent image, I think Ewan has really added something in his interpretation of the image, although your more off centre composition is preferable. Well done

Thanks Nicholas. Have to say, i keep coming back to that image (the original)... it's just great. off to find lichen!!... (unfortunately in the centre of Leeds this could be trickyish)

Just made another modification - combined the lichen with a portrait of mine... I don't want to post it in the mods section - as it is a bit ott I think (too far off the original) is there anywhere I could post it to see what people think? Or would you mind Edward if I added it to the mods?

Great image of something we all (most) walk by and ignore every day. Love the colours and texture and the formation of lichens looks really good too.

Fantastic colours and patterns I too would go for the cropped version. At first I'd thought you were using an underwater housing as this looks like some sort of undersea scene.
