Lifting the Veil

By keithh
Sat here printing and thought, what the hell, post one of my favourites from the year and possibly one of my all time favourites......sometimes a risky thing on EPZ.

A stitch of three 20mm images which on the eyes of EPZ does not make it a panoramic.

Wonderful shot; I love the play of light on the hills and the dramatic colours of the sky with the sun spotlighting the hill (and the man leading his camels Smile )

Love how that ray of sunlight hits the group of trees on the hill.

Lovely light and colours, and the rolling hills are pure England, just what we think of in NZ about what Britain would look like.

Can understand why its one of your fave's Keith and I agree, it would look lovely huge and on a wall.

yeah - it does look better

weird shot though... as in weird conditions, the sun's power peeking through those clouds, relatively dark sky, then the really bright foreground... you'd almost think it was one of those HDR's you produce the first time you use photomatix - if you see what I mean? Oddly dark sky, strangely bright land etc.

one I'd like to see as a really big print I think cause I'm not quite getting it, and if it's one of your faves, I assume I'm missing something Wink

The conditions are a heavy rising mist from the valley beyond the hill which resulted in a heavy smog-like layer of fast moving cloud With the strong sun about to break through I knew I woud need a heavier grad than usual - in this case a four coupled with a one stop which was pulled slightly lower. This also results in a bright sun lit foreground, especially with it being verdant can see the darker hill where the sun won't hit until several hours later.

It's one of my favourites for a few reasons. It was a difficult shot to capture. The conditions might never get repeated. The sun will only rise in this position once a year. It's from a viewpoint not often taken....and I like it for it's ethereal quality, which has always been an appeal in landscape photography for me.

thanks for the comments you lot

eew... But judging from my new Border Collie, I thought sheep were fast!

Well anyway about the picture. You really nailed it. The sun in that perfect spot from a large distance which probably means you'd have to be 100m away the next day to get the same position as the sun moves daily. The lifting fog with the sun just peeping out. What's all that green stuff on the ground? Grass? It should be dry and brown. Amazing what photoshop (or some rain) can!

So often seen but that viewpoint is a new one. You have demonstrated the value of research and planning. Killer landscape shots likethis are rarely 'lucky' and, this reminds me of the retort, "Funny, the more I practice the luckier I get."
Keep 'em coming Keith.Smile
