Like patience on a monument

By mrswoolybill
He's been supporting the mantlepiece at Seaton Delaval Hall for nearly three centuries now. He's entitled to look desperate.
The title is from Twelfth Night, it's a description of sorrow; it came to me as I was looking at this.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon ‘em……or a mantelpiece!

Having googled I also have found a painting with the same title -"Patience on a monument smiling at grief " painted by John Roddam Spencer Stanhope (1829-1908)
But I don't see any smiling here - how much longer is all I see !!

Thanks folks. Helen, here's the full quote. It's from Viola, disguised as a man - purportedly talking about a sister, in fact describing herself...
. . She never told her love,
But let concealment, like a worm i' the bud,
Feed on her damask cheek; she pined in thought
And with a green and yellow melancholy
She sat like patience on a monument,
Smiling at grief. Was not this love indeed?
We men may say more, swear more: but indeed
Our shows are more than will; for still we prove
Much in our vows, but little in our love.

Sad, wistful eyes, pleading, who is going to take the weight off my shoulders?? Good mono, Moira with nice details.

A smashing mono and a pity someone cannot sympathetically give him back a nose
