Lilac Breasted Roller

One of the most beautiful birds I've ever seen, with lovely pastel colours. It was photographed in the wild, in the middle of Pilansberg game reserve, South Africa, and I was lucky to have a long lens on the camera at the time. It apparently gets its name from the fact that when displaying in the mating season it tumbles or rolls in mid air - a rather aerodynamically-risky technique, I'd have thought.

Jon - you're right. I've prepared a copy for one of my nine projected image entries at the camera club next season and in that one I've put in a small highlight.

Good to see you back Jim - For your sake I hope Temporarily -

and yes indeed - Rollers - beautiful birds grew up amongst them - in particular the Mozelekatse Roller (the name we knew it by in Zimbabwe - Rhodesia) which I think in fact is the Lilac breasted Roller.

Hope you had a wonderful time - dying to go back there myself
