Lilac Time

By Jasper87
Flushed with success from my first flower upload I thought I'd try again. This is a Ceanothus, aka California Lilac, and also a New Jersey Tea plant as its leaves were used as a black tea substitute in colonial times.

Back garden, Iso200, f11, 1/125s, 100mm, tripod and remote release, natural light.

Many, many thanks for your views and comments on 'Yellow', greatly appreciated.

A bright sunny day today to balance England's dismal performance last night.

Enjoy your day wherever you are.

Good composition and light Dave and the added bonus of that beautifully sharp hover fly!

Lovely colourful flower - I'm afraid our lilacs were a washout this year, but this is in excellent condition. Lovely capture with the insect well placed to stand out from the flower

Very nice d.f. and beautiful colours,as Ann said the hover fly is a bonus, give escale to the flower.

Hi Dave, you have done very well with this! The light is quite harsh and normally the flower gets burnt out, you have controlled the exposure perfect my friend, I would like to see a square crop of the main flower to bring the hover fly larger as it looks pin sharp to me.

A real cracker not least with the inclusion of that lovely wee visitor. Great colour and light in the flower too. One of my favourite garden shrubs but you've taught me something I didn't know about it this morning! I really can make tea from those leaves - wonder if I'll be brave and give it a try?

Super image Dave, and likely to do every bit as well as your first one!, great detail in the flower and hover fly, bought to the attention even more by the Bokeh!

Nicely done sir.
good colour mix
The subject is nice and sharp and the background is good
soft out of focus. But for me the middle depth of field
is distracting. I think Trev suggestion is good.

Others have mentioned the apparent harsh light but you have handled it well and recorded the blues of the blooms so well, not always so easy with blue flowers, I find, Dave.

Didn't have you down as a flower power tog, DaveTongue But when you first come out of the closet, you do it in style, that I'll say. Marvellous angle on the light here, bringing out the very best of its colours and hues.

I'll resist any jokes about the English team, at least they got to the finals unlike my beloved bunch of useless.........rant overWink

Many thanks to Trev and others re the square crop. I have uploaded a quick crop and also allowed for mods. I uploaded the original as I liked the patterns of the negative space in the background, and the buds and leaves framed the open flower well. The tall stem worked to join the image together. I like the square crop, but as a separate image which emphasises the insect now.

Well coloured shots here Dave.
And I was delighted England got beat.
No,--nothing to do with the fact that I am Scottish.
I have a friend who works in an Italian take away, and he promised me a free pizza if Italy won.
I would have still been delighted if it was Scotland they had beat !!

Surely you mean 'blooming with success' from your last floral upload? Wink
The crop has worked well focussing attention on the flower with the delayed gratification (so to speak) of noting the hoverfly. Focus on the fly is excellent and the colours are lovely.

Generally speaking macro's 'pop' better with a blurred background and even on your crop, the flower head would benefit from a shallower DoF. Means you have to be handy with the focus ring and live view to capture a fast moving insect on a sunny day but it does increase the overall impact!
