Hello, Neil. I walk with a friend who has a Westie that loves the water, so this is a familiar sight. The picture is good, Lilly is looking at you, and your background is just water, nice and uncluttered. The only problem is the burnt out area on Lilly's back and the top of her head, due to strong light hitting the white coat. It is often the case that this area lacks any detail and that detail cannot be recovered in editing, unless you shoot in RAW. You can lighten shadows but cannot recover blown highlights. So getting it right in-camera is important, and I would suggest underexposing because you can brighten the image in editing and you will have a good chance of having detail throughout the coat. Using exposure compensation on a minus setting can work. Bracketing is another alternative. Avoiding very bright sunlight is an obvious option. Do some practice with Lilly until you get it right. Take a series of shots, underexposing a little more each time, and see the effects.
