Living Rough

By keith selmes
I thought the image came out looking rather assertive - although actually the pony is snoozing in the evening sun, inside its winter coat. The coat is the current fashion in pony colour but ponies this size and shape have been living here since just before the humans arrived - this sort of rough moorland or steppe country is just what they need.

An attractive looking pony with a happy alert looking posture.
I think having the pony off center would have strengthened the composition here and
unfortunately I find the sky a little too bright.Perhaps trying to find an angle so as you could exclude as much of it as possible would be an idea.

Dark moorland and a big bright sky is a perennial problem - a graduated filter is probably the answer - have not got in the habit yet.
I considered croppping to alter composition, but felt it would lose more than it gained.
Thanks for the comments.

My only nag is how central the pony is too. The light just looks wintry to me and misty. Lovely shot. Really nice work. Ali Smile

Just had a look at this from your thread link. I think they're both terrific images. The central composition just isn't an issue for me as the head after all is the main point of interest and I think the exposure works extremely well (the sky is fine for me) - love the rim effect as well. It looks like a great lens too from the images I've seen.

This is nice, but I thing the target is too middle of the picture (imho).

It is a slightly awkward composition, although as Sandy said, the head is the main point. For various reasons, I didn't feel there was a better crop.
